Graduate and Clerk Careers
In 2021, Carter Newell will be looking to secure two candidates for a shortened winter clerkship program from Monday, 5 July to Friday, 16 July 2021. Our clerkship program provides law students in their penultimate year of study the opportunity to experience working in our high performing, specialist teams right from day one. Our two week program, with a single team rotation, allows Clerks to work closely with senior lawyers on a range of challenging matters and provide insight into the day-to-day life at Carter Newell. Our Clerks have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience within our Insurance, Construction & Engineering and broader Commercial/Corporate teams under the guidance and support of an assigned buddy.
We look for candidates who possess a proven academic record, have highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills, a strong attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills and a real passion for the law! We are seeking students who are set to graduate in July or November 2022.
Our two week clerkship program application dates open on Monday, 12 April and close on Friday, 30 April 2021.
If this sounds like the role for you, please email your CV and cover letter to Catharine Jones, HR Coordinator, at email@example.com

Madeleine: “I would wholeheartedly recommend the Carter Newell clerkship program for anyone completing a law degree. During the 2020 Summer Clerkship program, I was given practical legal experience through attending mediations and court hearings, drafting legal documents and conducting legal research. Completing two rotations in different legal teams helped me to narrow my focus on the specialty which I will pursue as an admitted solicitor. The team at Carter Newell was also very inclusive and I felt supported by my assigned buddies and everyone in the team.”
Rebecca: "I loved my time as a clerk at Carter Newell in their 2020 summer program. I completed two rotations and really enjoyed both areas; I attended conferences, conducted legal research, and lodged documents. I was grateful to be given the opportunity to work on real matters and I learned a lot through a hands-on approach. I made some great friends during my time as a clerk and would recommend Carter Newell to anyone looking to gain some experience before graduating. My clerkship helped me to understand the areas I am interested in practising and I believe it will give me a real advantage when I become a Graduate Lawyer."
Molly: “I would highly recommend the Clerkship program at Carter Newell Lawyers. As a pre-penultimate or penultimate student, it is extremely useful to get some ‘real life’ legal training. At Carter Newell you will be helping real clients and assisting lawyers and partners with real matters. I think there are advantages in doing a Clerkship in a medium sized firm as you get that personal feel whilst still being exposed to top-quality work. The Clerkship will help you get a head start on your legal career in a place that is encouraging, friendly, supportive and fun!”
