Cultural diversity

The firm continues to encourage and build awareness of cultural diversity and identities across our employees, clients and greater community in order to maximise cultural intelligence. Cultural diversity means applying a D&I lens to recruitment, development and promotion processes across the firm at all times.

Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)

The firm’s ‘Reflect’ RAP provides the firm’s commitment to not only engage but also increase our awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, protocols and events. Our plan includes further developing our relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, with continued celebrations and support across National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC week.

Employment Pathways and Work Experience

Our work with a leading Queensland university and their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Faculty will assist the firm in supporting and improving the pathway through education into employment for Indigenous Australians.

Bridging the cultural divide between Indigenous law students and the legal profession, representatives from CN and the LawLink program from the Queensland Law Society took part in a yarning circle with students from years 10.11 & 12 from Mabel Park State High School in 2021.

On the back of this visit, the firm launched an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander work experience program, welcoming one student from Mabel Park State High School for a week in 2021. This will continue in 2022 with the addition of another High School, and a select number of clients have indicated their interest to also be involved.

Carter Newell recently celebrated a number of cultural events in 2021, with a range of events planned for 2022:

  • Guest speaker to celebrate and provide insights into National Reconciliation Week 2021 theme ‘ More than a Word, Reconciliation takes Action’.
  • Welcome to Country celebrations were held in 2021 with Songwoman Maroochy and her daughter Baringa, of the Turrbal Tribe, which also included a blessing song, Dreamtime Storytelling and understanding of the Turrbal People’s history.
  • Celebrations through a touch of orange and recipe sharing. Harmony week was celebrated across all offices.
