Carter Newell has operated in the marine sector for a number of years, acting for clients from domestic pleasure craft operators and marina facilities through to international vessel owners, and Lloyd’s syndicates and global cargo interests. We understand the industry’s unique combination of domestic regulation, international convention and commercial complexity, and apply that understanding to deliver practical, commercially focused advice.

Each segment of the marine industry carries its own distinct risk profile, regulatory framework and commercial dynamic covering commercial vessel operations, marina facilities, shipbuilding and repair, tugboat operations and international container terminal incidents, pleasure craft and recreational operations.

We have represented clients in matters throughout Australia and offshore jurisdictions and have pursued cross-border recoveries against vessel owners, NVOCCs and manufacturers/ shippers in the United States, Korea, China and India. Our experience in both domestic litigation and international marine matters means we are well positioned to advise clients wherever their exposure arises.

Our marine insurance team works closely with claims managers, underwriters, brokers and corporate self-insureds, developing a deep understanding of how marine businesses operate, the risks they carry, and what is at stake when things go wrong. We are familiar with the commercial realities of hull and machinery coverage, marine cargo chains, vessel operations in Australian and offshore waters, and the cross-border complexity that arises when owners, operators and manufacturers span multiple jurisdictions.
