Graduate and Clerkship Programs

Carter Newell’s Graduate and Clerkships programs offer tertiary students the opportunity to experience working in high performing, specialist legal teams.  Our partners and lawyers, who are some of the best in Australia, take a proactive approach in mentoring. Our Graduate and Clerkship programs provide an opportunity to acquire valuable skills and build a strong foundation for a successful legal career.

Graduate Program

The Carter Newell Graduate Program (CNGP) is a structured 12 month graduate program, designed to set graduates up for success in their legal career. It includes:

  • 2 x 6-month rotations in 2 different practice areas (with the option to just do 1 if preferred)
  • mentoring from senior lawyers in each practice area
  • a buddy to help you along the way
  • professional development opportunities to help you hone your legal skills
  • financial assistance and study leave for your PLT and admission

Positions in our Clerkship Program or as a Research Law Clerk are not prerequisites for our Graduate roles, but these roles do receive preference over outside candidates.

Clerkship Program

Our clerks undertake a three-week clerkship during which they will rotate through various practice teams. The Brisbane vacation clerkship program is open to penultimate year students.

  • Applications for Clerkships open: Monday 15 July 2024
  • Applications for Clerkships close: Friday 9 August 2024
  • Offers will be made: Wednesday 9 October 2024
  • Offers to be accepted or declined: Thursday 10 October 2024

We offer Summer One and Winter Clerkships in line with the QLS guidelines.

Our Clerks have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, with real legal work, within our Insurance, Construction & Engineering and broader Commercial/Corporate teams. The program also involves networking with recent clerks and graduates, together with profile building and business development sessions to help you in navigating your professional journey.

We are looking for candidates with a proven academic record, highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills, strong attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills and a real passion for the law! Our recruitment process will involve an online application, phone interview and face-to-face interview.

Research Law Clerks

Our Research Law Clerks are law students with 12-18 months left of their degree, looking for exposure to a range of practice areas. Working 2-3 days each week, this role provides an introduction to private practice.
