Carter Newell assists in the redevelopment and reopening of the Capricorn Copper mine

Carter Newell would like to congratulate Capricorn Copper on the production of its first copper concentrate from the redeveloped mine located in Northwest Queensland.

The Refurbishment and Restart Project, which was declared a Prescribed Project by the Queensland Minister for State Development in April 2017, was completed on time and within budget.

The Capricorn Copper mine is one of Australia’s largest copper development projects located in a prolific base metals region, 125km north of Mt Isa in North West Queensland. Capricorn Copper’s Board approved the capital program to commence the Refurbishment and Restart Project in November 2016, following the completion of a detailed feasibility study, which outlined the optimal strategy to recommence operations on a sustainable basis.

The project expects to produce approximately 30,000 tonnes per year of copper in a high grade and quality concentrate over an initial mine life of ten years.

The project encompasses a high grade resource, containing over 900,000 tonnes of copper metal, and strong exploration results are expected to support a mine life beyond ten years and potential for expansion.

The Carter Newell Energy & Resources team, led by Partner James Plumb and Senior Associates Johanna Kennerley and Kelly Pain, is proud to have assisted Capricorn Copper in its redevelopment efforts, spanning all aspects of regulatory and key commercial contract negotiations.
