About Michael

Michael is a Partner in Carter Newell's Construction, Projects & Infrastructure practice, advising clients on the delivery of major construction, engineering and infrastructure projects and the management and resolution of complex project issues and disputes.

His practice focuses on complex disputes and strategic advice across the resources, energy and infrastructure sectors, including major mining developments, renewable energy projects, rail, road, bridge and tunnel infrastructure, and complex building projects. He regularly works with principals, contractors, consultants and project stakeholders to identify and manage risk, resolve complex issues and achieve commercially effective outcomes on major projects.

Michael advises on issues arising throughout the project lifecycle, from contract formation and risk allocation through to project delivery challenges and complex disputes. He provides pragmatic, commercially focused advice that is informed by the realities of major project delivery and aligned with our clients’ broader commercial objectives.

Prior to returning to private practice, Michael worked in-house for a leading international contractor on major projects in the Middle East. This experience provided direct exposure to the commercial and operational challenges of delivering large-scale projects and continues to inform the practical, project-focused perspective he brings to his practice.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Master of Laws, is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has published extensively on construction and infrastructure law. His articles have appeared in the International Construction Law Review, Building & Construction Law Journal, Australasian Dispute Resolution Journal and Australian Construction Law Newsletter.
