Michael is a Partner in Carter Newell’s Construction & Engineering team, practicing predominately in dispute resolution.

Michael has advised principals, contractors and consultants on issues arising on civil, building, mechanical, electrical and mining projects throughout Australia and overseas. Michael is results focused and works closely with clients to identify risks as early as possible in order to achieve commercial outcomes and avoid protracted disputes.

Over the course of 2018 and 2019, Michael worked in-house for Bechtel in Oman, assisting with Bechtel’s delivery of the multi-billion dollar Muscat International Airport. While working in-house Michael assisted with various aspects including corporate governance, prime contract administration, commercial strategy and legal claims, and obtained an excellent understanding of key client concerns on large projects.

From 2011 to 2013, Michael was appointed as a Judges Associate and served in that role at the Queensland State Law Courts. As a Judges Associate, Michael was involved in trials and interlocutory hearings, which have provided him with a complete understanding of trial management and the rules of evidence.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Master of Laws and regularly contributes to leading industry publications including the International Construction Law Review, the Building & Construction Law Journal, the Australasian Dispute Resolution Journal and the Australian Construction Law Newsletter. Michael is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has been recognised in Doyle’s Guide as a Rising Star in Construction & Infrastructure Australia.
