As a partner in the Financial Lines Insurance team, Katherine has over 17 years post admission experience in the specialty areas of financial lines and cyber security.
Katherine acts for clients in the Australian, Asian and UK insurance markets in significant and high-profile disputes and inquiries. She conducts the claim response and drafts submissions, pleadings and witness statements. Katherine represents parties at mediations and negotiates optimal outcomes for clients. She advises on both coverage and defence and has a commercial approach that reflects her experience in the industry. Katherine determines strategy and investigates the factual circumstances of the often-complex claims against directors and officers and corporations, so that the best solution can be swiftly identified.
Katherine has worked on a range of contentious matters in a variety of jurisdictions and acts for leading financial-service providers and London-based and company financial lines underwriters in the defence of claims.
Katherine advises on cyber policy wording and incident response plans, and has experience in identifying the scope and extent of data breaches, and ascertaining whether such breaches are notifiable under the Privacy Act. Katherine has dealt with the OAIC and Australian Cyber Security Centre and ensures that notification obligations with respect to affected individuals are satisfied while balancing the need to minimise business interruption and avoid unnecessary publicity.
She has been recognised by Best Lawyers Australia 2022, 2021 and 2020 editions in the field of Professional Malpractice Litigation and is also been recognised as a Leading Queensland Professional Indemnity Lawyer in Doyle’s Guide.
Katherine joined Carter Newell after several years in a top tier international firm, prior to which she was assistant in-house Legal Counsel for a Lloyd’s managing agent in London.
